3rd Grade Miro Monsters
At the beginning of the year, 3rd graders learned about artist Joan Miro (pronounced Wahn Mee-row) We created monsters inspired by his artwork by combining shapes and lines with a black sharpie. Liquid watercolors made our monsters colorful.
3rd Grade Birch Trees
A variety of techniques were used to create these. First, students created birch trees by dipping the edge of a piece of cardboard in black paint and swiping it across the paper. They added a horizon line and used brown paint for the ground. For the sky, they applied liquid watercolors and sprinkled salt to create texture. Finally, they used q-tips to apply tempera paint to create autumn leaves.
3rd Grade Wayne Thiebaud Cupcake Drawings
After studying artist Wayne Thiebaud and creating paper mache cupcakes, we extended our unit by drawing realistic cupcakes. They learned to create value by blending white and black oil pastels.
3rd Grade James Rizzi Self Portraits
Artist James Rizzi was famous for his whimsical paintings using a cartoon style. We were inspired by elements of his art to create these self portraits. After drawing a self portrait with a mirror, students added fun symbols to the background and painted their art with tempera paint. A bold sharpie outline was added as the final step.
4th Grade Natasha Wescoat Artwork
Students were inspired by Michigan artist Natasha Wescoat, who creates whimsical paintings and drawings. They created their art using sharpies and watercolor markers. Natasha even visited our school to share her work with us!
4th Grade Radial Designs
4th grade students learned about radial symmetry, and how it applies to both math and art. We created symmetrical designs on metal tooling foil, and then expanded our designs onto a circular piece of paper.
4th Grade Pop Art Self Portraits
Students studied artist Roy Lichtenstein, a famous American Pop Artist who used primary colors and Ben Day dots to create a comic book style in his work. After a lesson in drawing a self portrait, students used markers to create their own self portrait with a pop art twist.
5th Grade Self Portraits
5th grade students learned about Chuck Close, a contemporary artist living in New York. Chuck Close has faced many challenges in his career, including difficulty remembering faces as well as being paralyzed. He has overcome these difficulties and continues to paint large portraits by breaking the face down into squares.
Our 5th graders drew inspiration from Chuck Close as they used a mirror to draw a realistic self portrait. Adding a grid with a ruler, they then colored in each square with markers.
